What is an Interpretive Naturalist?

Interpretation blends science with art to touch lives and inspire an awareness and appreciation for our natural and cultural resources. The staff at Mounds State Park in this role present many programs that share the unique stories of this park.

Our Interpretive Naturalist, Angie Manuel

Angie pointing out wildflowers on a nature hike.

Angie is our full time naturalist interpreter and has been with the park service DNR for 4 years. She previously worked at the Indiana Dunes and Potato Creek State Parks

This time of year, Angie is particularly fond of spring wildflowers, as she points out some exceptional trilliums located along the hillside.

On the right is skunk cabbage, found in the biologically sensitive area called a fen. This plant blooms in very early spring, it is one of Angie's favorites.

If you asked her, Angie would say that she loves everything about Mounds State Park. But when you get to know her, she’ll tell you that school field trips are her favorite. She loves to lead 4th graders on nature hikes who are studying Indiana’s history. The lifestyle of Adena Indians who made the prehistoric mounds, for which Mounds State Park is named, allows Angie to talk about wildflowers, trees, animals, hunting, pottery, canoes, White River, caves, and of course the 2,000 year old ceremonial mounds.
